Your thigh buzzes. You reach for your phone. Nothing is there. A second later it happens again, and now you’re sure you felt it. This isn’t one single event tied to one place. People report it all over the world, from crowded subway platforms in Tokyo to quiet offices in London to college campuses in the U.S. The basic mechanism is plain: the brain is constantly predicting sensations based on habit and context, and sometimes it “fills in” a vibration that never arrived. It feels like touch because the nervous system is built to treat a hint of touch as real, especially when it fits a familiar pattern.
What the feeling is
The sensation usually lands in the same small patch of skin where a phone often sits: front pocket, jacket pocket, waistband, even a bag strap against the shoulder. It tends to be brief and specific, more like a short pulse than a long tremor. People often describe it as “my phone buzzed,” not “my leg tingled,” because the feeling arrives already labeled by the brain.
A concrete scene is easy to recognize: standing in a checkout line, body still, attention half on the room, half on whatever might happen next. The hand goes to the pocket automatically. The overlooked detail is how narrow the sensation can be. It’s not the whole leg. It’s a thumb-sized area, right where fabric presses, which makes it easier for the brain to treat it like a device alert instead of a vague body signal.
Why the brain invents a vibration

The brain does not wait for perfect data. It runs predictions, then checks incoming sensory signals against those predictions. With phones, the pattern is trained hard: thousands of repetitions where a small buzz leads to a glance, a message, a social hit of information. Over time, “buzz in pocket” becomes a high-priority template.
When the sensory input is noisy—clothing shifting, a muscle twitch, pressure from a chair edge—the prediction can win. The brain picks the most likely story and stamps it as touch. That’s why the feeling can arrive with certainty even when the phone is on a table across the room.
The body signals that get misread
Several ordinary signals can masquerade as a buzz. A small muscle fasciculation can flutter under the skin. A compressed nerve can fire a quick “pins and needles” blip. Fabric can catch and release, creating a tiny rolling pressure that resembles vibration. None of these are strange on their own. They happen to everyone.
The reason they get misread is timing and placement. A twitch that occurs exactly where a phone usually sits is more likely to be interpreted as an alert than the same twitch on the forearm. The brain uses location as evidence. It also uses posture. Standing still with a phone in a tight pocket creates constant background pressure, which makes small changes feel sharper.
Attention, expectation, and the “checking” loop
Phantom vibrations show up more when attention is divided. Waiting, anticipating, or feeling socially “on call” pushes the mind to monitor for signals without realizing it. The brain becomes watchful for a buzz, which raises the chance that ambiguous sensation gets accepted as one.
There’s also a feedback effect. If a person has a few false alarms close together, the brain treats the pocket area as even more important and keeps sampling it. That sampling is not a conscious scan. It’s more like a background process that boosts small sensations into awareness. The result is the familiar moment of certainty followed by confusion when there’s no notification.
Why it feels so convincing
Touch is designed to be believed quickly. From an evolutionary perspective, missing a real touch can matter more than reacting to a false one. So the nervous system errs toward detection. A brief “buzz” is a perfect candidate: it’s small, plausible, and easy to act on.
And modern phones make the illusion easier. Vibration alerts are meant to cut through noise without sound, so they are intentionally salient. That salience becomes a memory of a specific sensation. After enough repetitions, the brain can replay the feeling from partial inputs—pressure, twitch, expectation—and it lands with the same emotional tag as a real notification: immediate, personal, and hard to ignore.
