The concept of the person has many links: face, voice, context, shared memories. The name itself can be just one arbitrary label attached to that rich bundle.

Frequency matters too. Common words get practiced constantly, so their sound patterns are well-worn. Names might be used less often, even when the person is familiar. That lower rehearsal makes the pathway easier to disrupt, especially under time pressure or in situations where speech is already being managed (turn-taking, politeness, staying on topic).

Why it sometimes pops out later

The delayed “now I remember!” moment is a clue that the brain didn’t stop searching when the conversation moved on. Activation can keep spreading in the background. Eventually, the right combination reaches the threshold and the word becomes available. People often notice this after a context shift, like stepping into another room or starting a different task, but the timing varies and is hard to predict.

There’s also a simple mechanical issue: the moment someone is stuck, they often keep checking the same wrong pathway. That repeated checking strengthens the competitors and keeps the target just out of reach. Later, when attention is elsewhere and the loop breaks, the target can win the competition and appear cleanly, sometimes with the exact pronunciation that was missing before.
